Working with Adolescents in Love in the Digital Age: Challenges in Countertransference

This workshop explores how to use our countertransference reactions, and it will be experiential. Robert Tyminski will cover a brief overview of countertransference in analysis looking at how different psychoanalytic traditions have approached it, as well as how it’s understood today. Two anchors have been recognition of countertransference as an analytic resource and as a potential interference in the analytic field. Differentiating between these is part of the art of analysis.
DR Tyminski will also show short clips from the 2025 Netflix miniseries “Adolescence” that tells a story about a 13-year-old boy’s first infatuation, which turns into real brutality. By writing down their own feeling responses, participants will be encouraged to see how they feel while watching. These will be discussed as a pathway into analytic subjectivity and how to use them creatively.
DR Tyminski will then present clinical vignettes in which he notes his countertransference responses to something that an adolescent patient says to him in a session. He will invite participants to discuss their feeling reactions to each clinical vignette, which will offer opportunities to work as a group in the countertransference. Participants will be encouraged to dig into a topic that often is at risk of drifting into theoretical abstractions that are distant from the actual feeling experiences.
ROBERT TYMINSKI, D.M.H. is an adult and child analyst member of the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco and a past president. He teaches and lectures across the U.S. and internationally. He is the author of The Psychological Effects of Immigrating: A Depth Psychology Perspective on Relocating to a New Place (2022) as well as other books and articles. He is a 2016 and 2025 winner of the Michael Fordham Prize from the Journal of Analytical Psychology. His new book about psychotherapy and analysis with boys and young men will be published by Routledge in early 2027: A Practitioner’s Guide to the Male Psyche in Analysis and Psychotherapy: Under the Hoodie.
