Nina Wessels in dialogue with Alessandra Cavalli
Nina Wessels will draw on her experience of working with children in two different special schools: one a 7-year-old girl with an ASD diagnosis, whom she saw for once weekly therapy in a special school for children with severe autism, and the other a 14-year old boy whom she saw off campus, but who was enrolled in a school for boys with ‘Emotional and Behavioural Disorders’. Both children had traumatic childhood experiences and she will explore the interplay between external as well as internal states of terror.
Nina Wessels initially trained as a social worker in South Africa where she worked with young offenders and their families. She is a qualified child psychotherapist and works full time in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Teams and in school settings. She is currently training as a psychoanalyst with the British Psychoanalytic Association and works at the Tavistock Clinic as a child psychotherapist. She is also the organiser at the Tavistock of a course entitled ‘Psychological Therapies with Children, Young People and Families’.
