SUMMARY:Reclaiming the ‘gravamen’ - And it’s not typology! With Dr St
 eve Myers
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 22nd February and 1st March\, 2025\n\n16:00 – 18:00
 London\, (17:00 CET\, 11:00 New York\, 08:00 San Francisco)\n\nOver two Sa
turdays\, The Journal of Analytical Psychology is offering an online (Zoom
 ) two-part workshop\, led by Dr Steve Myers.\n\nBackground\n\nSoon after J
ung published Psychologische Typen in 1921\, it became increasingly appare
nt to him that most readers were misunderstanding the book and missing his
most important message. In 1923\, when H. G. Baynes—in collaboration wi
th Jung—translated the book into English\, he added the subtitle of ‘o
r\, the Psychology of Individuation’ to point to the gravamen of the boo
 k. In the 1925 seminars\, Jung recognised that people were misunderstandin
g his philosophy (introduced in Chapter II) and tried to explain it. In 19
34\, he directed readers to Chapters II and V (rather than the types in Ch
apter X) as containing the essence of the book. He repeatedly complained a
bout misreadings but\, as a result of his pleas being ignored\, Jung event
ually decided not to bother with a revision of the text\, as he had done w
ith other works. And Jung continued his protestations right up to the end
of his life\, when he refused to help a PhD student by providing comments
on the latter’s MBTI research because that was not the purpose of Jung
 ’s book.\n\nSession format\n\nThis series—consisting of a pre-sessiona
 l video and a pair of two-hour presentation-and-discussion sessions—will
examine this divergence between Jung’s theory and popular interpretatio
n\, and consider how Jung’s gravamen can be reclaimed in the 21st centur
 y. The series will consist of:\n\n Watching a pre-sessional video at http
 s://myers.co/psychologicaltypes that:\n\n\n introduces Jung’s book\;\n
describes the differences between the psychological types using art\;\n
examines the divergence between Jung’s intentions and popular reading\;\
n describes the core of the book which\, in Jung’s later career\, he il
lustrated using the metaphor of alchemy.\n\n\n The first two-hour\, onlin
e Zoom session will include:\n\n\n discussion of the issues raised by the
video\;\n introduction to Jung’s concern about the existential threats
to humanity posed by nuclear weapons\, the support for that concern provi
 ded by astronomy\, and how the Pauli-Jung conjecture informs that debate\;
\n examination of Jung’s philosophy which is still misinterpreted today
\; this will focus on Chapter I which Jung did not point to in the Argenti
ne Foreword\, but Steve will demonstrate is a fundamental part of the grav
amen of the book\;\n consider the role of the transcendent function in Ps
ychological Types\, and how it relates to the axiom of Maria\, by consider
ing the writings of Jung\, von Franz\, Jeffrey Miller (author of The Trans
cendent Function)\, and Steve’s own PhD research into the relationship b
etween the transcendent function\, mythology\, and religious tolerance/con
flict.\n\n\n The second two-hour session will look at natural expressions
of the transcendent function (and its absences)\, including:\n\n\n the N
orthern Ireland peace process\;\n the transition from Rhodesia to Zimbabw
e under Robert Mugabe’s leadership\;\n the transition from apartheid to
the rainbow nation in South Africa\;\n making use of film examples to de
monstrate the natural expression of the transcendent function in the life
of Nelson Mandela\;\n a discussion to consider the importance of Jung’s
gravamen to the future of humanity and how that gravamen can be recovered
not only in the contemporary use of typology but also in wider public awa
reness.\n\nSteve Myers M.A.\, Ph.D.\, (UK) is a Visiting Fellow in the Dep
artment of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies\, University of Essex.
He is the author of Myers-Briggs Typology vs Jungian Individuation: Overc
oming One-Sidedness in Self and Society (Routledge) and is currently work
ing on a second book for Routledge\, provisionally titled A Jungian Solut
ion to Political Polarisation: Antagonistic Worlds and the Transcendent Fu
nction. He has a commercial background in management consultancy and has p
ublished several academic papers that are primarily concerned with non-cli
nical (“normal”) applications of analytical psychology. \n\nCost: £95
to attend both workshops\, £60 for one workshop\n\nA concessionary rate
of £65 (£45 respectively) is available for candidates in training/router
s and students.\n\nFees can only be refunded (less 25% administration char
ge) if a written notice of cancellation is received no less than 14 days b
efore the event. No refund can be made after that time.
