Professional Doctorate

Doctorate in Analytical Psychology (D. An Psych)

Doctorate in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (D. Psych Psych)

Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies, University of Essex, in collaboration with the Society of Analytical Psychology (SAP), the Tavistock Clinic and the London Centre for Psychotherapy (LCP).

Background

This is a part-time, two year programme for analytical psychologists from the Society of Analytical Psychology, adult psychotherapists in training (or those who have completed a training) at the Tavistock Clinic or the London Centre for Psychotherapy. There are plans to widen those eligible further.

The course leads to a Doctorate in Analytical Psychology or Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. It offers a structured method of continuing professional development aimed at enhancing research skills and contributing to the development of the field.

All candidates will write a research dissertation. The research for the dissertation can be carried out in any area of analytical psychology or psychoanalytic psychotherapy, subject to the availability of suitably qualified supervisors.

In some cases, the nature of the research for a professional doctorate will be indistinguishable from research for a PhD, especially when the clinical process itself is not the source of data (for example, in conceptual, historical and outcome studies). In cases in which the clinical process itself generates the data, such as the use of one or a small number of detailed case reports or the use of psychodynamic observation and interviews, there are quite particular methodological issues unique to clinical research and this course particularly aims to explore and develop research in the clinical domain. Whatever form the thesis takes, its length is 35,000 words (approximately half that of a PhD dissertation).

The programme comprises a taught course in research methodology and a research dissertation. Teaching for the courses will take place at the University of Essex’s Belsize Centre in London, NW3.

Entry Criteria

In the case of Members of the Society of Analytical Psychology:

The requirement for entering the research component with the aim of working towards the professional doctorate is Membership of the Society of Analytical Psychology. Anyone who began the training from 1988 onwards is eligible to enter the research component. Anyone who started the training before 1988 will be considered on an individual basis. In such cases factors of Continuing Professional Development, such as having gained Professional Membership or having become a Training Analyst will be taken into account. Continuing membership of the SAP is a pre-requisite for enrolment throughout the professional doctorate programme.

Fees

The fee was £1,935 inclusive per annum for the 2007/2008 session and will be reviewed for future years. In addition, some students may wish to seek out additional clinical supervision with an Associate Supervisor, as outlined above, and this would need to be arranged at their own expense.

Applications

Applications should be made on the standard application form. Applicants must also send a brief statement (around 300 words) on a potential research topic. Eligible applicants will then be expected to have an informal discussion with the course director about the appropriateness of their proposal.

Applications should be sent to the Graduate Secretary at the address below as soon as possible and no later than 1st September for admission in the October of the same year.
