In his final completed work, Illustrations of the Book of Job, the artist and visionary William Blake gives an elegant summary of his philosophy concerning ‘the state of Satan’ and its connections with ‘human imagination’. The ‘state of Satan’ continues to be of central importance to humanity today because it confronts us with perennial personal and social questions: What is evil? Is it innate? What is the role of the artist/philosopher/therapist when relating to this state? Carol will engage with Blake’s response to ‘Satan’ and will make links with Jung’s concept of The Shadow.
She will begin with the contemporary experience of the novelist Sebastian Faulks, who woke up one morning to find himself listening to a mercurial inner voice that led to the writing of his novel Engelby. Finally, Carol will refer to the satanic state through dreams from patients and from material concerning current forensic psychotherapy.
The talk will contain illustrations by Blake.
