Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Training
We are delighted to invite applications for our NEW Training in Twice-Weekly Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, beginning January 2014.
The training has several entry points, including the Society’s popular long-running Foundations in Analytical Psychology course.
The training will be informed by Jungian and Post-Jungian theory and practice and there will be an emphasis on contemporary themes and ideas that are relevant to the provision of analytically informed treatments in a variety of clinical settings. The course will also draw on recent research into clinical methods and development in related disciplines such as child development, attachment theory and neuroscience.
The new training will give trainees the opportunity to join the SAP Adult Analytic training.
Those begining their training with the Foundations Course will need to start twice weekly personal therapy at least a year before beginning training modules in January 2014.
Entry Requirements
- A degree or degree equivalent;
- A relevant professional qualification is an advantage;
- Personal analysis for a minimum of 12 months prior to starting the training with the same analyst at a frequency of 2 times weekly. Personal analysis must be undertaken with a Member of this Society who has been qualified for at least 5 years. Analysis with Members of other Societies or with Trainees is not acceptable. A list of eligible members will be available with the Education & Training Administrator;
- 6 months psychiatric placement before starting clinical work.
Note: We suggest that you start with a professional member/training analyst if you plan to continue onto the adult analytic training through the escalator model, in order to meet the requirements of the adult analytic training. Informal interviews to discuss aspects of the training can be arranged through the Education & Training Administrator.
Outline of Training
- The curriculum consists of a number of modules relevant to the theory and practice of psychodynamic psychotherapy informed by Jungian, post-Jungian and psychoanalytic ideas;
- Seminars will be held once a week, starting in the late afternoon;
- After each set of three modules, trainees will be required to write one short essay of 2000 words and one longer essay of 4000 words;
- When theoretical and clinical requirements are met, trainees will be required to write a paper of 5000-6000 words;
- Personal analysis continues throughout the training.

- Approaches to the Unconscious
- The Therapist’s Approach to the Patient in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
- Transference/Countertransference: What’s you and What’s me?
- The Self: From Cradle to Grave
- The Wounded Healer & Challenging Patients
- Working with Dreams & Symbols
- Brief Psychotherapy
- The Role & Use of Research in Clinical Work
The structure of the evening will be theoretical seminars followed by clinical seminars.
Saturday workshop themes may include:
- Assessment for Psychotherapy
- Ethical Dilemmas in Clinical Practice
- Working with Trauma
- Suicide, self-harm and trauma
- Working with Otherness & Cultural Complexes
- Working with LGBT patients
- Spirituality
- Impasse in Therapy
Cost of Training
The major cost of training lies in the cost of analysis, the fees for which are arranged directly with the analyst. Supervision fees are paid directly to the supervisor.
